The <strong>exquisite<\/strong> strains of Raag <strong>Darbari<\/strong> still vibrated within the hall. Emperor Akbar looked up, his eyes lit with admiration. &#8220;Wonderful!&#8221; he said. &#8220;Superb! I listen to you every day, but I can&#8217;t seem to have enough!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-background-color has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">Tansen bowed in silent gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Someone sings better than me said Tansen &#8211;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"90\" height=\"140\" src=\"https:\/\/edu.sunsoftworld.com\/schoolo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/12-e1736069956584.jpg\" alt=\"sant haridas - teacher of Tansen- The Song of songs\" class=\"wp-image-53\" style=\"width:199px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sant Haridas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-background-color has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">&#8220;I think you have the most wonderful voice in the world!&#8221; said Akbar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-background-color has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">&#8220;But I don&#8217;t, Shahenshah!&#8221; said Tansen with a smile. &#8220;There is someone who sings far better than I do.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">&#8220;Really?&#8221; cried the disbelieving Akbar. &#8220;Then I must have him sing in my court. Can you arrange it? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tansen shook his head. &#8220;I&#8217;m afraid he will not come, Sire.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;What! Not even if he hears that the emperor himself has <strong>summoned<\/strong> him?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"> &#8220;No, not even then.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"> This reply would have <strong>enraged<\/strong> any other emperor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But Akbar was different. &#8220;Very well, Ustadji,&#8221; said Akbar, smiling into Tansen&#8217;s half-scared eyes. &#8220;If he doesn&#8217;t come, I shall go to him, myself. Will you take me to him?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;Yes, Sire, provided you do not come as the Emperor of Hindustan.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;I shall go as a humble lover of music.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Akbar and Tansen Goes to Haridas &#8211; singer of song of songs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"> Sant Haridas was the man, Tansen had spoken of. He had been Tansen&#8217;s music teacher and he lived the <strong>austere <\/strong>life of a hermit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\" style=\"border-radius:0px\">When Tansen and the emperor reached his hut, he was busy with his daily chores. When they asked him to sing, he smiled but said firmly, &#8220;I&#8217;m long past the age for singing.&#8221; Even his favorite pupil could not <strong>persuade <\/strong>him to change his mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But Tansen knew how to get round him. He offered to sing before his guru. And he made a <strong>deliberate <\/strong>mistake. &#8220;That&#8217;s not the right note, Tansen,&#8221; cried his teacher, amazed. &#8220;What has happened to you?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tansen did not seem to understand his teacher and he made the same mistake again. <strong>Exasperated<\/strong>, Sant Haridas took the tanpura from Tansen&#8217;s hands and sang the right note. Then he went on to the next and the next!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The music spread across the forest, like the first glimmer of dawn or the fragrance of jasmine. Both Akbar and Tansen listened to him as if they were <strong>hypnotized <\/strong>and the emperor realized that Tansen had spoken the truth. He had not known that music could be like this! He had certainly never heard anything like it before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Haridas is better than Tansen &#8211; Song of Songs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"> As they walked back, the emperor suddenly broke the silence to ask Tansen, &#8220;Why can&#8217;t you sing like him, Ustadji?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tansen smiled. &#8220;Shahenshah, I sing at your command, the command of the Emperor of Hindustan. But Guruji sings for one who is Master of even kings! GOD! His music springs from the depths of his soul, free and unasked for.
